Life is funny sometimes. How things come full circle. Back in February, I went on a farm tour in Imperial Valley. I was in a romaine lettuce field and the farmer casually mentioned that the crop would be heading to Wendy’s. His words stuck with me and last week, I found myself behind-the-scenes in a Wendy’s kitchen learning + seeing for myself how fresh their salads really are. A little background on me: I have over 18 years experience in food management (I’ll spare you my resume). Everything I knew about salads came in the form of precut and bagged vegetables. My staff would pour salad mix in a bowl and it was a done deal. We didn’t cut heads of lettuce so I just assumed that’s how salads were done everywhere. Wendy’s proved me wrong. You ever wonder what it takes to go from field to table? Check out this awesome video of Wendy’s Romaine Lettuce Journey (I promise it is a real cool video!)
Changing the process and setting the bar for fresh.
In every Wendy’s restaurant, employees freshly chop vegetables every day, starting with full heads of iceberg and romaine lettuces and other veggies like cucumbers and tomatoes. Not just assembled.
This is Wendy’s BBQ Ranch Chicken Salad. I got to make one myself and it was awesome. My new favorite. Every salad entree uses only premium white meat chicken breasts that are grilled at the time of your order and placed warm on your salad.
The most popular salad on the menu: Wendy’s Apple Pecan Chicken Salad. The cool thing about Wendy’s since it is prepared fresh for you is you can opt out of an ingredient you might not want and the nuts are packaged separately in case you have allergies or just don’t like nuts! Maybe you want more apples instead of cranberries, just ask!
Wendy’s Asian Cashew Chicken Salad. Maybe you want to switch it up and want a spicy chicken breast or homestyle chicken breast, that is the beauty of salads prepped just for you! Which salad is calling your name?
Now you know just how fresh the salads are at Wendy’s but have you been in one lately? There is remodel going on that makes me want to hang out in the restaurant instead of doing drive-thru! The Wendy’s I checked out at 5326 Torrance Blvd. in Torrance has a fresh modern look with flat-screen tvs, free wifi, light wood seats, tables and walls, natural lighting, charging stations and fireplaces!
