Christmas and New Year’s went by completely way too fast for me. It was like time just ran out. I didn’t get to get my shopping on like I wanted to. I definitely had to make up for it with some Three Kings Day shopping at JCPenney. This year is our first year celebrating Día de Los Reyes and I wanted to make Rosca de Reyes for my familia. I was on the hunt for fancy décor, new kitchenware and fun gifts that will last a lifetime so my sons will continue the tradition.
Día de Los Reyes is celebrated on January 6th to honor the Reyes Magos (the Three Wise Men) – Balthazar, Melchor and Gaspar. Traditionally Rosca de Reyes (aka King’s Cake) is served after dinner on January 6th with hot chocolate. Here is ours with Kylo Ren from Star Wars. I like to either add a modern touch or a vintage feel to our cultural traditions. I came across him at JCPenney when I was happily shocked at finding their vast Star Wars collection. He had to come home with me. He is going to make the best gift for my sons on Three Kings Day.
I didn’t get to bake our Rosca de Reyes like I wanted to because I got sick but hey, I’m ready for next year with my new Cooks 5-pc. Nonstick Bakeware Set from JCPenney! So the story goes, there is a doll (to represent baby Jesus) hidden in the King’s Cake and whoever gets the slice with the doll must host a party in February.
One of my kings smelling our Rosca de Reyes!
I cannot wait to get better so I can get to baking. California is experiencing some fantastic baking weather right now!
As tradition goes, the children place their shoes with a wish list on top for the Three Kings before going to bed on the night of January 5th. In the morning, the shoes are filled with toys and gifts from the Three Kings.
